Scratch Animations of Gujarati Folk Tales
Class 6 students retold folk tales their grandparents narrated as animated Scratch stories, combining coding, language and culture.
This was a cross-subject project between the computer lab and the Gujarati class. Students first collected folk tales from family members and wrote them as short scripts in Gujarati.
In the lab, they storyboarded each scene, drew characters in Scratch's paint editor and animated them with broadcast messages and simple loops. The narration was recorded in the children's own voices.
Twelve animated stories later, we hosted a 'film festival' for parents. Coding concepts covered: sequencing, loops, events, parallelism. Language skills covered: narrative structure, dialogue writing and expressive reading.
